This article by Barbara Foorman in Teaching Exceptional Children (2007) provides a nice overview of a response to intervention (RTI) model of academic supports. These supports are designed to prevent reading failure and students being identified as “special needs” due to a curricular or instructional disability. In other words, the RTI model attempts to; a) prevent learning failures that might be due to an ineffective curriculum, b) assists educators with how to select a core reading program, and c) evaluate the effectiveness of a schools instructional practices.
