BIE Online Academy
Boulder Institute for Educators (BIE) provides online graduate and undergraduate courses leading to college credit and/or certification in the area of Response to Intervention (RTI) and Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS). This online academy is supported by Successful Schools, Inc. and Seattle Pacific University.

BIE Online Academy Overview
The initial three-part series of online coursework will address PBIS and its application within a traditional or RTI framework of educational problem solving and support services. Participants will have the opportunity to take courses that address school-wide, classroom, and individual student support plans.
Course #1: Overview of School-Wide Positive Behavior Support: Tier 1
Participants learn how to develop, implement, and maintain school-wide behavior plans.
These plans emphasize positive, pro-social behaviors and provide a foundation for supporting groups and individual students who display challenging behaviors and who may be at-risk for school failure.
Course #2: Targeted and Group Positive Behavior Interventions & Support: Tier 2
Course 2 provides educators with skills necessary to make decisions about who might benefit from a targeted intervention, when and how to identify those students in need of additional supports, and how to implement and monitor the effectiveness of targeted interventions.
Course #3: Individual Positive Behavior Interventions & Support: Tier 3
Strategies for supporting students who require the most intensive level of individualized support within a school-wide system of PBIS. The strategies covered in Course 3 include: a) using functional behavioral assessment to guide the development of behavior intervention plans (BIP); b) strategies for developing effective BIP’s, and c) assessment tools for monitoring the effectiveness of BIP’s.
The three courses will be structured around readings, discussion forums, and online conversations with experts in the field that will address common questions and challenges as educators develop and apply a model of positive behavior interventions and supports.
Course Syllabi & Objectives
These three courses will cover specific strategies for designing environments in which
- Learning and teaching are valued, and aggressive, unsafe behavior are discouraged;
- Respect, responsibility, cooperation, and other highly valued character traits are taught and encouraged;
- Individual differences are valued and respected rather than criticized;
- The education of students with disabilities can be supported more effectively; and
- The teaching of fundamental skills (e.g., reading, math) can be maximized.
These courses are being offered through a unique partnership between Successful Schools’ expert faculty and Seattle Pacific University accreditation.
